Hayseed’s DIY Workshops: Backyard Livestock 101

Chickens are a great way to manage insect populations in your garden, fertilize soil and turn a compost pile… all while giving you the best eggs you’ve ever had. Rabbits help to turn vegetable scraps into great fertilizer and also make a high quality lean meat that has been enjoyed by people worldwide for ages. If their meat isn't of interest, they also make fabulous pets. In this class, learn all about the anatomy and behavior of chickens, nutrition, housing, and proper handling of chicks and adults! You'll also learn about rabbit care, different types of housing, handling and harvesting techniques. There will not be any live slaughtering demos, sorry! Students will leave with a choice of either a copy of Storey’s Guide to Raising Chickens or Storey's Guide ro Raising Rabbits so that they can get started on their own backyard flock or colony.
